Hello to all of you lovely people who are doing your bit to keep yourself, and the environment clean and green.

Whether you are like myself, and making small steps towards a toxic and waste free life style, or you are a full on tree hugger, go you! It can be a long road to significantly reduce your toxin intake, especially when we are surrounded by so many harmful chemicals that are hidden in our personal care products and food, with labels that tell us otherwise.

Although we still consume harmful toxins through inhalation of fumes like hairspray, ammonia fumes, fuel, synthetic fertilizers etc. We are so fortunate to live in a country where the air isn't very compromised, and we get to decide what we put in our bodies. I personally have been making small changes over the last couple of years from changing my diet, to watching what I’m putting on my skin, and doing my best to purchase goods that are made ethically, don't contain a bunch of chemicals, and the packaging can be re-used or re-cycled. They are out there, you just have to look a bit harder than you'd like to sometimes. It's easy to buy things as you need them, quickly and conveniently. I’m trying to be generally more aware about where things come from, what’s in them, and what's going into my body. Which is why Bare is using the 'sustainable luxury' brand, Oway (Organic way), which is a giant leap towards a better future.

I’m Jade, the founder and proud owner of Bare Hair Studio. I was in-between jobs because of an injury that hadn't healed properly when Covid-19 meant lock down for New Zealand, so it was time for me to start thinking about my next steps, what I was passionate about, and what was going to suit my lifestyle. I had worked in salons with harsh chemicals for 15 years and I felt like I needed to do something that didn’t involve so many harmful toxins entering my body through my skin, and the fumes I was constantly breathing in. I was concerned about mine and the health of others, but I wasn’t ready to give up hairdressing yet.

While I had so much time on my hands over the lockdown period, my amazing other half and I were enjoying being outside and spending time with our animals. At home in Te Aroha, surrounded by beautiful trees, the sound of birds chirping, and a nice view of the mountain. We enjoyed lockdown so much and started talking about how nice it would be to have a studio on site. A comfortable, welcoming environment for women to get their hair done with luxurious, yet natural and non-toxic colour and hair care. It wasn’t long after that conversation we had cleared out the garage and transformed into architects and designers haha.

I spent so many hours designing Bare’s logo and website, which changed maybe 34,5679 times, considering I am no web developer! Creating something from nothing proved to be an exciting and creative challenge. While I was busy changing my mind every hour, my handyman fiancé’ was prepping what used to be the old garage/storage shed for renovations, his electrical trade helped immensely!

The build ended up taking a lot longer than we expected, because initially my handy man was going to do everything himself. While he is very good at being a jack of all trades, we needed some professional help because our ideas turned into more ideas which lead to it not being the small home studio we originally planned. By October, Bare hair studio had turned into not just your typical garage salon, we had decided to incorporate the room next to it too, making it spacious, cozy and quiet.

We have 6 animals on the property, including x2 kune kune’s (Jeffrey & Helga),  x2  cats (Amy & Eli), a chicken (Henrietta), and a Frenchy cross English Bulldog (Mavis). Mavis will greet you, very excitedly shaking her booty because she doesn’t have a tail to wag. And you might get a cat on your lap if you’re lucky. The piggies are fenced off but are very social, and will always say yes to a scratch if you would like to meet them.

If you have a well behaved dog that you don't want to leave at home, you are more than welcome to bring he/she along for a play date with Mavis. The section is fully fenced, and Mavis has her own quarters away from the pigs.

I am so happy to be able to offer non-toxic hairdressing services and hair care in Te Aroha. I am so passionate about hair and want to be able to share my space with other like minded hairdressers. But for now, it'll be me you will be seeing in the studio.

I look forward to making you feel fresh and fabulous.

Jade
